The empty stage. The masks. The Chorus… Imagine an audience of 13,000 here at the Ancient Theatre of Επιδαύριος thousands of years ago!

Just as I was attempting to recall some lines from our high school theatre productions “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Medea”, I heard an opera piece sung by another visitor. Whoa, the acoustics were as fantastic as they were described in the books:) A few minutes later, I found myself singing the French song “Vois Sur Ton Chemin”. Since I am not at all confident about (euphemism here…actually terrified of) my French pronunciation, I skipped most of the beautiful lyrics, but the other visitor actually sung along. The song became a duet with so dramatic a setting.

A short and sweet conversation followed. The soprano turned out to be an elegant Belgian lady who also loves the film “Les Choristes”. Even after half an hour, neither of us could stop singing the song at the archaeological site of Epidaurus!

“Vois sur ton chemin
Gamins oubliés egarés
Donnez- leur la main pour les mener
Vers d'autres lendemains

Sens au coeur de la nuit
L'onde de l'espoir
Ardeur de la vie
Sentier de la gloire

Bonheurs enfantins
Trop vite oubliés effacés
Une lumière doree brille sans fin tout au bout du chemin

e le e, i le e, e le i, i le e,e le e, i le e, i le e
